People may find it hard to believe, but I am supposed to be invincible. Ok, that is at least what I like to say while making fun of people that read into quantified data with emotion. Allow me to explain with greater detail.
First, I had read material related to 18-24 year old men and risk taking behaviour. This spike in quantified data was cross-referenced to qualitative research linking the belief of invincibility to risk taking behaviour (no harm has come from risks taken, therefore no harm will come from new and greater risks). This is then mixed with the sentimental belief that you are, or will be, the person you believe yourself to be. Since I am an 18-24 year old male, then it is obvious that I am invincible. It is much funnier if you either put it into perspective for a joke or make that statement before doing something that is both hilarious and risky.
Lets try some scenarios:
Y.Male: "Hey, I should swim in this freezing water."
Other: "Isn't that a bad idea, you could get hurt."
Y.Male: "I'm an 18-24 year old male nothing can hurt me"
Spalsh!
Another Scenario:
Other: "We should start the campfire"
Y.Male: "I'll get the gas. Where are the hot dogs?"
Other: "I think that is dangerous and illegal."
Y.Male: "Nah. Hot dogs aren't criminalized yet. And I can handle some extra sodium. Remember, I'm invincible."
Other "I meant the gasoline."
Spark. Whoosh!
Ok so those may not be as hilarious as the Marijuana Kills commercial (Seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_f9O4FFQyAE) but this idea does convey a believable, albeit irrational, reason to believe I am invincible.
As I recover from my recent cold there is one question left unanswered. Where is my invincibility?
